Who are we?

Mr J Dawson

What are our aims?

To study the social world in which we all live. Understand and appreciate what, in society, makes us behave the way we do. Be able to consider issues of culture, class, gender, ethnicity and social status. To answer the question, "how do these factors make us the people we are".

What we do in KS4

Sociology is offered as an option in the KS4 years. Areas of study are;

What we do in KS5

We a re pleased to say that we currently achieve the highest grades of Raine's Sixth Form subjects and are well above national average for the previous three years.

We do this via a range of styles and techniques: individual study, discussion, seminars, presentations, group projects, ICT.
You will be expected to tackle and understand complex and sensitive topics, in a mature and dedicated approach to study.

To begin to study this subject at A-level you will need 5 A*-C grades at GCSE minimum. B grade English GCSE is strongly recommended, however you will still be considered providing you have either: more than 5 A*-C grades, or B grades in Humanities subjects.

How is my work assessed?

KS4 - 3 written exams (1 in year 10, 2 in year 11). There is no coursework component.

KS5 - All assessment is exam based, there is no coursework. The exams are based mainly on essay writing.

What skills will I develop?

Sociology is an excellent subject for students, as it provides students with a sound understanding of the social world. In addition to this, most professional careers, including medicine, require students to have some knowledge of Sociology and social theory.

The specific modules you will study are:

  1. The Family                 (AS)
  2. Education                   (AS)
  3. Religion                      (A2)
  4. Crime and Deviance   (A2)

Will this course suit me?

The most important reason for studying Sociology is to fuel a curiosity for the society in which we live. If you are not afraid of new ideas and enjoy debating and discussing (sometimes) controversial points, then Sociology is for you!
