What are our aims?

Physical education and sport, regardless of age, gender, injury, ability or size, is for everyone. The physical benefits and social skills learnt through a practical setting are immense and should not be restricted by the aforementioned categories.

In the practical environment of physical education students have the unique opportunity to learn and enhance simple and complex motor skills, both in game settings and individual sports, while learning life defining interpersonal skills such as co-operation, confidence, communication and leadership potential.

The varied physical education settings are an opportunity for students to increase their self-esteem, install a sense of pride in successes, and strive for personal improvement and attainment in all areas of the curriculum.

By providing enhanced opportunities, through our wide curriculum and extra-curricular activities, and offering encouragement to engage in PE & Sport as participants, spectators, coaches, administrators or officials the members of our school community will be included in all the benefits that PE & Sport can provide.

Physical education is for everyone and all PE settings are physical, academic, social and personal learning experiences. The wide curriculum and extra-curricular activities on offer encourages students to not only as participators, but also as spectators, coaches, administrators or officials.

Finally by introducing a sound knowledge on health, sport and fitness activities students will be able to apply this knowledge in their own lives, both during school and then later in life.

What we do in KS3

All pupils enjoy experience of a wide range of sports including Basketball, Athletics, Trampolining, Hockey, Badminton, Football, Short tennis, Canoeing, Rock-climbing, Orienteering throughout the 3 year period.
These sports are experienced in a half-term rotation period, approximately for 6 weeks with assessment occurring at the end of each unit.
Years 7, 8 and 9, of course, are always offered opportunities to participate in 'activity' trips when organized.

What we do in KS4

During year 10 and 11, core PE is a government
requirement. In these two years students learn the tactical aspects
of football, badminton, basketball and rounders, whilst also extending their skills in athletics, rock climbing and trampolining. They also get to go to a fully equipped gym where they are taken through a basic cardio. and weight work out which they can use throughout their lives. The qualification offered is BTEC PE .

What we do in KS5

BTec PE

This course is again 100% based on coursework as is the Key Stage 4 BTEC however this time the curriculum is more geared towards the big step to A Level PE.
Students study the following topics in depth;

How do we do it?

The PE department is a highly progressive department with a wide range of teaching expertise including athletics, badminton, football, rugby, tennis and trampolining. In line with this we offer an extensive extra-curricular programme which is on offer for all students. Please see the link to the after-school activities timetable for further information.
The Department encourages students to participate in sport for the enjoyment, satisfaction, health and social benefits that are offered and, of course, opportunities to develop the range of natural athletic skills our students possess.
In addition the Department continues its tradition of organising activity trips in which much has been gained by the participating students.......and in turn they have been a credit to their school!
Trips include outdoor education trips to Newquay or Normandy (learning to surf is always a good laugh) and ski trips to France, Austria, New Hampshire (America) and this year Quebec, Canada.

KS4 - GCSE

We follow the EDEXCEL curriculum which requires an additional 3 PE lessons per week; 1 theory and a double PE lesson for the practical component of the course.
Theory lessons cover three sections;
A Exercise and Training
B Safety Aspects and Risk Assessment in Physical Activity and Sport
C Applied Anatomy and Physiology
<>Students are graded in their 4 best sports, so during the two years of the course they receive specialist training in athletics, badminton, basketball, football, rock-climbing, table tennis and trampolining. Individually pursued sports such as karate, horseriding, golf and swimming have also been assessed.
This course is now being superseded by the BTec course described below.

KS4 - BTec

This course is 100% coursework with students completing six units over the two years. The syllabus contains units such as; The Body in Sport, Health, Safety and Injury in Sport, Practical Sport, The Sports Industry and Preparation for Sport.
Each unit requires the students to complete coursework with pass, merit or distinction grades awarded depending on the quality of work completed.
