What we do in KS3
In years 7 & 8 we follow a very practically based course focussing on the skills of peforming composing and listening. Students are offered the opportunities to take instrumental or singing lessons in groups or as individuals.
In year 9 Tutor groups are split in half and taught in groups of less than 15 which gives more scope individual attention. The course in year 9 builds on the skills learned earlier and all pupils learn the drum kit, guitar, keyboard and how to use 'Cubasis' to create music. Much of the summer term is spent on song writing project.
What we do in KS4
Btec First Certificate in Music is offered in years 10 and 11 and this has become very popular with up to three groups running in each year.
How do we do it?
Music @ Raines’ is taught in tutor groups which builds to utilise students' developing skills by taking part in band work and performances in the end of term talent shows and assemblies. In recent years the department has put on hugely successful 60’s and 70’s nights in which ensembles and bands of various sizes have been able to show off the skills learnt in and out of lesson time.
How is my work assessed?
The Btec course is assessed entirely through coursework. Achievement is at Pass, Merit and Distinction levels which equate to 2 x C, 2 x B and 2 x A grade GCSE points respectively. The level is gained by degree of effort and involvement of the student in the projects encountered.
What skills will I develop?
Obviously musical skills either playing instruments or singing. But probably more importantly the skills associated in working as an effective team over a period of time to produce an enjoyable experience for both the performers and an audience. Technical skills range from personal instrumental through song-writing and the use of technology through to the appreciation of the musical industry.
Will this course suit me?
Do you enjoy performance? Have you a musical skill? Do you enjoy very close creative collaboration within a team context?
Where can it lead?
Pure enjoyment of having a lifelong ability. Further courses and carees in a wide range of areas within the music industry.
