How do we do it?
We are actively establishing links with schools in France and Guatemala to broaden the context, for all students, of language learning at Raine's.
KS3
Work at this level is based upon the context of students' personal life experience. Describing feelings, interests and family experiences together with the expressing of opinions on close issues are focusses for activities. Visits are undertaken, day trips to Boulogne and the Christmas market in Lille are always popular.
KS4
Moving toward forming an understanding of the wider community and environment work becomes topic centred. This is both in terms of expression in other langauges and, very importantly, an appreciation of cultural diversity. Residential trips are both popular and successful, links with a language school in South of France are currently being developed with the ultimate view of exchange visits for each schools' students.
How is my work assessed?
KS3
Through each year three common assessments are undertaken, one per term, in each of the four skils in both French and Spanish.
KS4
The AQA GCSE course is divided into formal examination at the end of year 10 of reading and listening and at the end of year 11 again an examination but this time of speaking and writing. In addition two pieces of internally marked coursework are required.
What skills will I develop?
- The ability to communicate in chosen languages.
- Enhanced adaptability and communication skills.
- Confidence in unfamiliar situations.
Will this course suit me?
Have you an interest in other cultures and nations? Do you like the idea of working in other countries? Do you enjoy foreign travel? Are you a people person?
Where can it lead?
Languages are very often combined with many other career directions, after all 'globalisation' means that recruitment may now involve working for a company in other countries.
Any course of career that involves travel will be far more effective with a knowledge of languages or ability to learn a new language.
