Who are we?

Mr A Downs (Head of Citizenship)

What are our aims?

Citizenship is all about our rights and our responsibilities. At Raine’s we believe pupils should learn to be active citizens who understand how the world works and are willing  to make it a better place. Pupils learn about their duties to the school community, the local community, their country and the wider world. Pupils also learn about what they’re legally and morally entitled to, in order to prepare them for the realities of life after school.

What qualification can we get?

In Years 10 and 11, Citizenship is compulsory . The coursework has to be about a campaign the pupil has been involved in. The exam board we use is OCR.
The GCSE Citizenship is a short-course GCSE, which is worth half a full GCSE. Pupils also take the Level 2 Certificate in Preparation for Working Life, which is equal to another half GCSE at grade B. When the two qualifications are counted together, this is equal to a full GCSE.

How is my work assessed?

All pupils at Raine’s take an examination worth 40% of the GCSE, and write up one piece of coursework worth 60% of the GCSE

What are the results like?

Citizenship is the highest-scoring compulsory GCSE subject at Raine’s. Our results are well-above the national average. Citizenship is so successful that it is one of the three specialist subjects of our Humanities College status.

Where can it lead?

It is a good foundation for studying A Level Social Science and Humanities subjects, such as Sociology, Law, Government and Politics. Some people may find particular careers where Citizenship is helpful, e.g. working for the local council, the police or pressure groups.
