What are our aims?
Art offers students a balanced curriculum, (physical, personal and visual) to connect their head, heart and hands so students become creatively intelligent anaylist, conveying their thoughts through skilled hands. We aim to develop students' creativity, imagination and awareness of their visual environment in contemporary life and different times and cultures. We promote students' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Through visual, tactile and sensory experiences they develop a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. The understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich our personal and public lives
What we do in KS3
Year 7 students are intoduced to 'The Formal Elements of Art' colour, line, tone, texture, pattern, shape and composition, plus cross-curricullar projects with Religious Education, The Sacred Image and Science, Cellular structures. Year 8 students explore: Still-life and Pop Art, The Moving Image, photography and Manga animation, Japanese Art and Hokusai Year 9 students explore: the link between Art and Music and artist Kandinsky, Self portraits and Identity and artist Sonia Boyce, The Human body, life drawing and artist Leonardo da Vinci.
What we do in KS4
GCSE Edexcel Art (unendorsed). The coursework topics are Unit 1 'The Natural Environment', Unit 2 'Myself'/'Illusion'. The exam topic is set by the board. Changes from September 2009: GCSE Art students will be doing one coursework and one exam unit.
What we do in KS5
GCE Edexcel AS/A2 Art (unendorsed) There is one coursework and one exam unit at both AS and A2 levels.
How do we do it?
KS3
Year 7 and 8 students are taught Art in a ten week carousel cycle with the technology department. Year 7 have three, Year 8 have two, and Year 9 have one lesson per week for the whole year. Year 9 are taught in half form groups with the other half doing Music at that time.
KS4
Students attend three lessons per week and follow the Edexcel Art (unendorsed syllabus). The coursework unit is worth 60% and the exam unit, 40%.
KS5
Students attend six lessons per week AS coursework 30% of Advanced GCE 60% of AS, exam 20% of Advanced GCE 40% of AS A2 coursework 30% of Advanced GCE, exam 20% of Advanced GCE
How is my work assessed?
KS5
Year 7 students are assessed at the start of the 10 week cycle to get a prelimenory level. Year 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 students are assessed summatively at the end of every project with a level/grade. The aim is that Year 7 reach level 4, Year 8, level 5 and Year 9, level 6 - 7.
KS4
Year 10/11 students are given detailed analysis of where they need to improve and what they need to do in order to raise their standards according to the Edexcel criteria.
KS5
Year 12/13 students are given detailed analysis of where they need to improve and what they need to do in order to raise their standards according to the Edexcel criteria.
What skills will I develop?
The curriculum aims to develop students observational drawing and painting, personal visual language, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving skills as well as their role as a world citizen with the use of different media in 2D and 3D. The students learn to carry out critical and contextual studies through the work of a wide range of artists of different genders and ethnicity. Students enjoy trips to museums and galleries and extra curricular Art work shops with visiting artists.
Will this course suit me?
Art is an inclusive subject, designed for students af all gender, faith, ethnicity or abilities. Students enjoy trips to museums and galleries and extra curricular Art work shops with visiting artists. Students work is displayed on both school sites, in the local and greater community in London and internationally. Students enter and win many Art competitions.
Where can it lead?
The skills that you will gain in Art will be useful to you in any number of careers: Art, Craft or Design. From Fine Art, Ceramics to Architecture. GCSE Art students often choose to do AS/A2 Art, then go on to an Art foundation course before being accepted onto degree courses at universities and colleges.
