Dear Parent and carer,

A Midwinter Night's Dream

Monday 20th December, 6pm. The Raine's players will be performing their hit show: 'A Midwinter Night's Dream' supported by music, carols and Christmas readings in the upper school hall.  Tickets for Raine's students/staff/parents available soon.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Well Done to the Raine's Players who performed 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' to raucous applause.  This was part of the National Shakespeare School's Festival, performing at the Unicorn Theatre on 12th November.  The feedback was excellent:"it was incredibly funny!"; "the cast worked well on stage to tell the story. I like the idea of the funny glasses being worn and passed on to show the effects of the love juice"; "the students were very professional throughout!"

GCSE results

GCSEs at 93%.
Today we celebrated our best ever GCSE results.
At GCSE an incredible 93% of pupils achieved at least 5 A*- C grades.  This means we have improved GCSE results for 3 years in a row and joined the exclusive ‘90% Club’.   Students have achieved 49% 5A* - C including English and Maths (the DfE’s only recognised measure for League Tables).
15 gifted and talented pupils, an equal number of girls and boys achieved 5 or more A or A* grades with many achieving 10 or more. A truly tremendous achievement.
21% of all pupils achieved an A or an A* in Religious studies.  100% of pupils taking Biology, Physics and Chemistry got at least a C grade. Outstanding A* – C subject results include87% in Art, 92% in Geography, 100% in Music, 74% in RS and 75% in Sociology  and 76% in Textiles.
96% of all young people at the school got 5A*- G including English and Maths.
This is a remarkable achievement for our inclusive school.  The wide range of additional support and intervention that we have offered pupils throughout year 10 and 11 has had a dramatic impact on individual pupil’s attainment at all levels of ability.
We couldn’t be more proud of our young people and their incredible achievements.

Taking a stand against bullying

Raine's took a stand against bullies in November 2009. The Beat Bullying Sports Mentoring programme, run over two days by the Beat Bullying charity, was a creative approach to raising awareness of this increasingly widespread issue.
Divided into six stages, the BB Sports Mentoring Programme used sporting themed activities as an outlet to illustrate the issues surrounding bullying. Students at Raine's worked in teams for a variety of tasks and challenges set in sporting scenarios. This pioneering workshop provided a familiar platform on which to address bullying - because what better way to express yourself than through sport!

The Tower Hamlets School Charter is born!

As part of local Democracy Week and Black History month, Tower Hamlets Borough invited Raine's to participate in the Young Mayor's School Council Conference on 16 October. Eight members of Raine's school council were sent to Mulberry School to represent us.
First and foremost, money money money!! The students involved took part in allocating budgetary funds towards local services. With #160,000 available, this was certainly no easy task!
Next a celebration in honour of Barack Obama was held. As a figure of global citizenship and civil rights, President Obama stands for the same values as our school council; co-operation, fair representation of students, engagement with local communities and democratic action.
Last, but certainly not least, we have the creation of the Tower Hamlets School Council Charter. The schools participating were asked to come together in creating an agreed document outlining binding statements that will become a foundation for actions by the school councils. Issues that were addressed included:

With a guideline pack of example statements and ample time for discussion, the schools were encouraged to put their pens to paper and start drafting a charter, a shining beacon of active global citizenship. We are officially part school council history in Tower Hamlets!

Charity campaigning time

With the Christmas lights already glowing on Oxford Street, it's time for Raine's to get festive! Get your sporting moves, movie trivia expertise and team working skills ready for a series of charity events that will take place during Raine's Charity Week. The Christmas Charity Campaign 2009 will support the elderly community, with the money going towards deleicious Christmas hampers. Activities on offer include five-a-side football games, basketball, movie clubs and staff events. Lets show Santa what we're made of!

Pioneers Day

Raine's celebrated Black History Month last month, proudly supporting this years's FA Sports Centre. Along with other schools, Raines pupils hopped from workshop to workshop learning about the different aspects of the football industry. Whether it was shouting your orders as coach, blowing your whistle as referee or scribbling your notes as a sports journalist, the interactive event catered to everyone's tastes.
