KS4

Year 10: When pupils reach year 10 they will be guided onto an appropriate pathway that suits their needs and allows them to reach their full potential.

The 3 pathways are:

Single Science, Double Science and Triple Science.

Triple Science

Pupils doing the Triple Science pathway will do Biology, Chemistry and Physics, worth 3 GCSEs. Students put into group 1 will be following this route. This course is ideal for students that wish to go onto do 1 of the sciences at A-level.

Pupils sit 9 externally assessed written papers and 3 internally assessed ISAs over the 2 years.

Biology

BIOLOGY UNIT 1 (25%), BIOLOGY UNIT 2 (25%), BIOLOGY UNIT 3 (25%)

+ Biology ISA (25%)

Chemistry

CHEMISTRY UNIT 1 (25%), CHEMISTRY UNIT 2 (25%), CHEMISTRY UNIT 3 (25%)

+ Chemistry ISA (25%)

Physics

PHYSICS UNIT 1 (25%), PHYSICS UNIT 2 (25%), PHYSICS UNIT 3 (25%)

+ Physics ISA (25%)

Double Science

Pupils following the Double Science pathway will do Core Science (in year 10) and Additional Science (in year 11), worth 2 GCSEs. Pupils put into group 2 & 3 will be following this route.

Pupils sit 6 externally assessed written papers and 2 internally assessed ISAs over the 2 years.

Core Science

-3 Written papers: BIOLOGY UNIT 1 (25%), CHEMISTRY UNIT 1 (25%) AND PHYSICS UNIT 1 (25%)

-+ Core ISA (25%)

Each paper is 1 hour long and contains structured and closed questions as well as at least one question assessing Quality of Written Communication in a science context.

Additional Science

-3 Written papers: BIOLOGY UNIT 2 (25%), CHEMISTRY UNIT 2 (25%), PHYSICS UNIT 2 (25%)

-+ Additional ISA (25%)

Each paper is 1 hour long and contains structured and closed questions as well as at least one question assessing Quality of Written Communication in a science context.

Single Science

Pupils doing following the Single Science pathway will sit Core Science, worth 1 GCSE. This pathway is for students in the 2 lower groups.

Pupils sit 3 externally assessed written papers and 1 internally assessed ISA over the 2 years. Pupils will also be doing some extra Maths and English in year 11.

Extra information concerning ISAs:

Teachers set the ISA and pupils are expected to research a valid method.

Pupils carry out an experiment during lesson time and complete 2 written assessments in class under controlled conditions.

Teachers mark the test, submit marks and a sample of the work for moderation.

Year 11:

Pupils in the current year 11 have been guided onto an appropriate pathway that suits their needs and allows them to reach their full potential.

The 3 pathways are:

BTEC Science, Double Science and Triple Science.

Triple Science

Pupils doing the Triple Science pathway will do Biology, Chemistry and Physics, worth 3 GCSEs. Students put into group 1 will be following this route.

Pupils sit 9 externally assessed written papers and 3 internally assessed ISAs over the 2 years.

Biology

BIOLOGY UNIT 1 (25%), BIOLOGY UNIT 2 (25%), BIOLOGY UNIT 3 (25%)

+ Biology ISA (25%)

Chemistry

3 Written papers: BIOLOGY UNIT 1 (25%), CHEMISTRY UNIT 1 (25%) AND PHYSICS UNIT 1 (25%)

+ Core ISA (25%)

+ Additional ISA (25%)

Each paper is 1 hour long and contains structured and closed questions as well as at least one question assessing Quality of Written Communication in a science context.

BTEC Science

Pupils following the BTEC Science pathway will do BTEC Principles of Science over 2 years.

Pupils complete 3 units of internally assessed coursework and sit 1 externally assessed exam over the 2 years.

Pupils are graded with Distinction, Merit, Pass, L1 Pass or Fail
